The dictionary defines problem-solving as the process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues. You can’t solve problems by dramatically demonstrating how bad something is, and yet that is what many people seem to do.
There are seven-steps for an effective problem-solving process:
- Identify the issue and be clear on what the problem is
- Understand everyone’s interest
- List the possible solutions
- Evaluate the options
- Select an option or options
- Document the agreement
- Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation
There are two important things to remember when it comes to problems. They happen all the time, and they present an opportunity to improve. Effective problem-solving takes time and attention. However, it takes less time than is required by a problem that goes unsolved.
While it may be tempting to put on a dramatic show about how bad something is, try these seven steps to problem-solving instead. No one likes a dramedy in the workplace anyway.
